Part two

EXT – Capeside Highschool Football Field – Night.

Joey is sitting on the bleachers when Dawson approaches her. He sits down beside her, unsure what to say. Her eyes are now dry but she still sniffs occasionally, close to tears. It takes him a full minute to find the words.

DAWSON

Why didn't you tell anyone?

JOEY

(with a bitter laugh)

It's not exactly something you put in your Christmas cards, you know?

(pause)

We didn't want to burden any of you, I guess.

DAWSON

Joey, we're your friends…

JOEY

Friends we've barely seen since we got married, Dawson.

Dawson lowers his head guiltily.

DAWSON

Everything happened in such a hurry…

JOEY

(angry)

Yeah, well, I was pregnant, Dawson. Things kind of had to be expedited.

DAWSON

(quietly)

You still could have told me.

JOEY

(shutting her eyes to hide the pain)

I know… I nearly called you dozens of times. But every time I tried I just couldn't.

DAWSON

What happened?

JOEY

(shaking her head)

He was fine… he was a happy, healthy baby. A bit quiet, maybe… he didn't scream in supermarkets or restaurants like other babies. We just thought we had an angelic child.

But he didn't start talking when the time came, he just seemed to prefer playing by himself. It was like he didn't even know we were there. He wouldn't respond when we called his name, or react to loud noises, so we first thought he was deaf. We took him to see a few doctors and they said his hearing was fine. They suggested we try speech exercises with him but nothing worked.

When he was three he started having these screaming episodes, and the head banging began. Finally the doctors gave us a diagnosis and since then we've tried a series of different medications and therapies. Most days he's fine, but then others….

(Joey pauses, tears filling her eyes)

Pacey's wonderful with him. When the doctors finally told us Liam was autistic, and we found out everything that it can entail, Pacey quit his job to stay home and look after him.

DAWSON

What about you?

JOEY

(shaking her head again)

Pacey's always been able to deal with it better than me. He goes to the support groups and researches new treatments. He's taking classes on experimental therapies and education programs. I don't know how he does it.

(turning to face Dawson)

Liam has no verbal skills at all. He can't handle human contact, even from his parents… I can't even hug my own son, Dawson. I don't know how to help him.

Joey begins to cry and can't stop herself this time. Dawson wraps his arms around her and holds her tightly. After a few minutes her sobs subside and she pulls away from him, embarrassed.

JOEY

I don't know what to do anymore. I don't know how any of this happened or why. I don't understand it and I can't deal with it like Pacey can.

DAWSON

(quietly)

Joey, is everything all right with you and Pacey? The two of you seem… different.

More tears form in Joey's eyes, revealing a new and different pain.

JOEY

(bitterly)

Dawson, if you had married your boyfriend when you were just finishing college after an accidental pregnancy, gave up a career that you loved in order to take one that actually pays the bills, and had a child who turned out to have a pervasive developmental disorder that will deny him, or you, from ever having a normal life, how healthy do you think your relationship would be?

She gets up abruptly from the bleachers and starts walking back to the gymnasium. Then she stops, her anger replaced by sadness.

JOEY

And how would you feel knowing that you couldn't even call your best friend and tell him every painful secret because of stupid adolescent bickering? You'd feel alone, Dawson. Trust me.

Dawson rises and walks to her, then embraces her in a silent apology. Joey hesitates a moment before she hugs him back gratefully.

INT – Potter's Bed & Breakfast – Night.

Pacey tucks a sleeping Liam into bed, then sits down wearily beside him. Liam wears a small frown in his sleep, and Pacey touches his forehead in a gentle caress. It the only time he can ever touch his son without Liam reacting. Pacey sighs, exhaustion etched in his features. He looks old.

Lost in thought, Pacey notices a photograph that has been placed by Liam's bedside. It is of he and Joey, taken on the day they left Capeside for college. Pacey smiles faintly as he remembers that day. The happiness on their faces is evident - they have their whole lives ahead of them. His smile fades slowly as he remembers…

DISSOLVE TO FLASHBACK

INT – Witter/Potter residence, Boston – Day.

A small apartment in Boston, where Pacey and Joey have been living for three years. It is cluttered and fairly untidy, with books strewn over a weathered dining table.

Pacey unlocks the door and enters noisily, dressed in a hospital orderly's uniform. He tosses his backpack by the door and walks into the tiny kitchen.

PACEY

(yelling as he opens the fridge and pulls out a carton of OJ)

Jo? You here?

Pacey proceeds to drink the orange juice straight out of the carton and walks back into the living room.

PACEY

Joey?

Deciding she must still be in class, Pacey deposits himself on the couch and switches on the television. He flicks channels indiscriminately, but his concentration is broken when he hears a noise from the bedroom.

Frowning, Pacey walks towards the bedroom and pauses when he gets to the doorway. He sees Joey curled up on the bed, her back to him.

PACEY

Jo, I didn't think you were home. Didn't you hear me call you?

Joey does not answer. Puzzled, Pacey crosses the small room and sits down beside her. He can tell she has been crying.

PACEY

(concerned)

Hey, you okay? Still not feeling well? Joey, you should go to the doctor.

JOEY

(still sniffling)

I did.

PACEY

Finally.

(pause, his brow furrows)

Everything's all right, isn't it? You’re not sick are you? I told you, you've been studying too much… They're just finals, Jo, you don't have to kill yourself…

JOEY

(dully)

I'm not sick.

PACEY

(getting up)

Good, because I can't afford to get sick and miss work. No spreading your pestilence to me, woman.

When Joey doesn't respond to his light hearted words, Pacey shrugs.

PACEY

Okay, so what is it then? Why are you moping?

JOEY

(not moving)

I'm not moping.

PACEY

(Sitting beside her again on the bed)

Let's get one thing straight, Potter. I know you. I know your moods. And this, my friend, is called moping. You did it for a week after we left Capeside and again when you got a B on that midterm. So what's say you and I go out, catch a movie and go to dinner and I will give you the Pacey J. Witter cure for moping.

(he leans down to kiss her neck)

And you'll even get the extra special treatment if you play your cards right.

Joey pushes him away, surprising Pacey. He lets out a frustrated breath.

PACEY

Okay, what am I supposed to do? You tell me, huh?

Joey pulls herself into a sitting position but avoids looking at him. She pulls her knees to her chest.

JOEY

(slowly)

Pacey, we need to talk.

PACEY

(chuckling)

God, what did I do?

JOEY

This is serious.

PACEY

(covering his nervousness with a joke)

Come on, Joey, you look like you're going to tell me you're pregnant or something. What's going on?

JOEY

(momentarily caught by surprise, she lowers her voice)

I'm going to tell you I'm pregnant.

Joey waits for Pacey's reaction, which doesn't come at first. When it does he laughs, not believing her, but she holds his stare and says nothing more.

PACEY

(shaking his head)

Nice one, Jo. You really had be going there for a second.

(long pause, during which the smile disappears from Pacey's face)

You are joking, aren't you? You're not really pregnant?

Joey nods her head miserably. Pacey looks away, shocked.

PACEY

(whispering)

Oh my God.

JOEY

Yep, that was pretty much my reaction this morning.

Pacey puts his head in his hands as it sinks in.

FLASHBACK

INT – Witter/Potter residence – Day. Half an hour later.

Pacey is staring out the bedroom window as Joey sits miserably on the bed. Neither has moved for some time. Joey glances at him, wondering what he's thinking. She drops her gaze again just as Pacey turns his head to look at her. He turns around slowly and sits himself beside her on the bed. Pacey places his hands on either side of Joey's face, forcing her to look into his eyes..

PACEY

(gently)

We're going to be okay.

JOEY

(pushing his hands away)

How can you say that, Pacey? I'm about to finish college. I'm supposed to be at the start of my career, not motherhood.

PACEY

Joey, we'll be okay. We'll work everything out.

JOEY

(angered)

How can you be so calm about this? I have been a wreck all day, and in less than an hour you're perfectly okay with the fact that we're unexpectedly pregnant?

PACEY

(with an ever-widening smile and a small shrug)

I guess I am.

JOEY

How? How is that possible? You've been experimenting with drugs at the hospital, haven't you?

PACEY

(amused)

No.

JOEY

Then how on earth can you be okay with this, Pacey? God, after everything I've done I've turned into my sister… knocked up out of wedlock and destined to spend the rest of my life in Capeside!

Joey flops down onto the bed dramatically, causing Pacey to smile further. He carefully conceals his grin before patiently sitting her up again. He expression becomes serious.

PACEY

(earnestly)

Joey, I'm okay with this because no matter what we decide to do, I love you. I have loved you for five years and I have to tell you, I don't plan on changing my mind any time soon. And while we didn't plan to get pregnant and the timing is lousy… the idea that you are carrying our child only fills me with the kind of happiness I only dream about. I can't help it.

JOEY

But Pacey, we can't have a baby. I haven't finished my degree, I only have a part time job that pays next to nothing, and yours can hardly support three people.

PACEY

True.

JOEY

We live in a crummy apartment with faulty heating and an elevator that's broken half the time. You work shifts. We hardly see each other for days on end.

PACEY

True.

JOEY

Not to mention the fact we're only 22. We're way too young to be having a baby. Bessie would kill me. You know how paranoid she was when we started sleeping together. She didn't want me to end up like her, not when I had the chance to go to college and make something of my life.

PACEY

True.

JOEY

(frustrated)

Pacey, you're not supposed to agree with everything I say! This is supposed to be an argument.

PACEY

(his eyes twinkling)

You want me to disagree with you? Sorry, Jo, but everything you just said is true.

Joey's face floods with disappointment that was hidden until now.

JOEY

So you think we shouldn't have the baby.

PACEY

Well, I didn't say that. I agree with everything you said, but I also think there's a lot you forgot to mention.

We don't make enough to support a family. But I can get another job, and you could always take the internship at the gallery in Washington you turned down. You graduate in a few weeks. And there's nothing to say you can't start your career a little later than planned. There's still graduate school and your Masters when you're ready.

As for the apartment, we live here because it's close to campus and the hospital. We haven't signed a life-long lease, we can actually move. Pretty easily, in fact.

And, yes, we're 22, but it's not like we're kids, Jo. Sometimes I think we're too mature. Other people our age stay out partying all night… you, on the other hand, study every waking hour and are about to graduate with honors, and I work a 60 hour week.

So you see, there are solutions here. And there's a baby. A baby, Jo.

Pacey takes her hands in his and kisses her forehead. Joey shuts her eyes but after a few seconds starts to shake her head. She pulls back from him.

JOEY

Pacey, what about your paramedic training? You were supposed to start next year but if I take the internship and then maternity leave there's no way we can survive without at least one income… I've had my turn at college and you've supported me for four years. It's not fair.

PACEY

(he can't help but smile)

Jo, I haven't hung around for the last four years waiting for my turn. We're in this together. And whether or not I become a paramedic or spend the rest of my days emptying bedpans… I don't care as long as we're together.

You know, there are a lot of things in this life that I'm not sure of. I don't know what sort of career I'm going to have and I have no idea where I'm going to be in five years. And while these things may be scary for most people I'm not afraid. Because after everything that's happened in my life up until this point, there are two things I'm sure of.

(he leans in, his eyes fixed on hers)

I love you with everything I am.

JOEY

(she smiles teary-eyed, beat)

What's the second?

PACEY

I always will.

Joey smiles and hugs him. Pacey holds her tightly.

JOEY
(whispering)

I'm terrified.

PACEY

Me too.

JOEY
(still whispering)

I want to have the baby, Pace.

PACEY

(smiling)

Me too.

They pull away enough to look into each other's eyes.

JOEY
(as Pacey wipes the tears from her face)

Are we completely crazy for doing this? I mean, isn't this decision supposed to be harder?

PACEY

(with a grin)

Would you change your mind after a few days of moping around the apartment, going over things again and again?

JOEY
(shyly)

No, I guess I wouldn't… I just didn't think I could make the decision so easily. I mean, four years ago in Capeside I would have agonized over this for weeks. And I know what I would have chosen…

PACEY

And I probably would have agreed with you. But things change, Jo. We've changed.

JOEY

I don't feel any different.

PACEY

I must be a bad influence on you.

JOEY
(with a small smile)

I wouldn't say that. I'd just say I'm lucky.

(she leans in and kisses him)

Although you did impregnate me, so I guess it is your fault.

Pacey smiles and kisses her back. Joey rests her cheek on his shoulder and Pacey holds her tightly. After a few seconds a frown appears on Joey's face.

JOEY

Although none of this changes the fact that Bessie is going to kill me when she finds out. I can just hear the lecture now…

PACEY

She'll be happy for us, you'll see.

JOEY
(shaking her head)

No, she won't. She'll just say I'm making the same mistakes she did. I mean, I know she loves Alexander and Bodie but, given the chance, she would have waited to start a family.

Oh well, I guess having a baby out of wedlock is just what Capeside expects of the Potters.

PACEY

(casually)

Well, maybe we should do something about that.

Pacey gets up abruptly. Joey watches on, puzzled, as he starts rifling through his underwear drawer.

JOEY

What are you looking for? And why is it in your underwear drawer?

PACEY

Because this is one place in the whole apartment you don't go near.

He pulls out a small book triumphantly and sits back down on the bed with her.

JOEY

(nervous with curiosity)

What is it?

PACEY

This is a bank passbook. I got it two years ago, and I've been putting what money I can into this special account.

JOEY
(shyly)

Why?

PACEY

For this.

(from the pages of the book he pulls out a picture of a diamond ring, cut from a magazine)

It's not supposed to be the actual ring of course, more an idea… or an inspiration.

JOEY
(eyes shining)

You were going to buy me a ring?

PACEY

Admittedly I was planning this for a couple of years from now… mainly so I could get up the courage to ask you.

Joey smiles happily but doesn't say anything.

PACEY

(nervous)

So?

JOEY

(innocently)

So what?

PACEY

You're still going to make me ask, aren't you?

JOEY

I'm afraid so.

PACEY

You're a cruel wench. You know this, right?

JOEY

Okay then… If it makes it any easier, the answer is yes. And I don't need a diamond ring to persuade me.

PACEY

(grinning)

Then Joey Potter, will you marry me?

JOEY

(pondering)

Hmm, let me think about it…

Pacey fixes her with a look, and Joey can only keep up the charade for a few seconds. She grins and kisses him passionately.
